Ok, so you’ve got your travel itinerary ready, booked your flights and accommodation, but now comes the question of how to get around. If you are just visiting Budapest for a short time period then the answer is probably simple – grab a taxi or grab one of the many public bus routes that run throughout city. However, if you are planning on staying in Hungary for longer than 4 days then read on because here are some other handy tips to help you out. The first thing to do when researching which public transport options are available in Budapest is figure out what type of ticket needs to be purchased before getting onto any form of public transport. There are two types - paper tickets or plastic cards. Paper tickets are cheaper than the plastic cards, but they can only be used for one ride (you won’t be able to reuse them) – so if you have a travel itinerary longer than four days, this may not be the best option. The plastic cards on the other hand will save you a lot of money if you are planning on travelling a lot because they can be used on both buses and trams, and have monetary value of up to 90 000 HUF. They also have validity of 12 months from the date of acquisition! For tourists it is highly recommended that they purchase either a single card or an unlimited-travel pass called “városnapos bérlet” for more than four days. This unlimited-travel pass is the most economical ticket for anyone staying longer than four days, and it is especially important when you are travelling out of Budapest to the cities of Székesfehérvár, Eger, Vác, Sárvár or Esztergom. The prices for this card are 3500 HUF (35 euros) when bought at the ticket office, but only 3000 HUF (30 euros) when bought online. 12000 HUF 24000HUF Ok so you’ve got your ticket so what next? Depending on where in Budapest you are your options will vary somewhat. If you're staying in the city centre/pest side: This is where most of your public transport and tourist attractions will be and is relatively easy to get around. The best way to get around this area is to use either the subway or tram routes. The two main subway lines are M1 (red) which goes all the way out to Újpest-Központ, while M2 (blue) cuts through the middle of Pest via Deák Ferenc tér, Deák Ferenc utca, Nyugati Station, Oktogon and Kossuth Square. Trams tend to run all over the city and there are five different lines: 1 - Szent István körút (Károly körút extends part way along it), 2 - Blaha Lujza tér (this is also known as Millennium Underground Railway) which goes to Budai Vár, 3 - Kőbánya-liget (this is also known as Széll Kálmánliget or Karolina Street Railway) 4 - Batthyány tér, 5 - Népsziget. cfa1e77820
